Protecting My Information

Answer:

This site uses secure technologies for protecting your information such as encryption at the network and data storage level.  However, there are several things you can do to protect your data:

  • Never give out your password or share your account with anyone.
When a user knows your password, they can access the system just like you do. The site cannot determine if you or another person is actually using your account. If you feel if someone else is using your account, you should immediately change your password using the My Profile feature.
  • Use the Log Off features of secure sites when not in use.
Simply closing the window or tab in your web browser for a site you log into does not log you off that site. When you log on, your internet browser is given unique and particular security tokens to use when talking to the site that identifies you as an authorized user of the site. If any other browser windows are open, these security tokens, and therefore your login status, is preserved so that you may quickly return to the site without having to log back in. This is a time saving feature of modern browsers, but can cause security issues for secure sites like banks and medical sites. By using the log off feature of the site, your security tokens are cleared, even if other browser windows remain open. Some browsers may also run a browser window invisibly in the background, so closing all the visible browser windows on your desktop may still not clear your security tokens for a site.
  • Do not use "Save my User Name and Password" features
Many modern internet browsers have a feature that allows the user to keep their login credentials stored in the browser. While this feature is nice, it may cause your user account to become compromised if anyone else uses your computer or device. If you want to use this feature, ensure that you use a screen saver or similar locking application on your device that protects your account. Never use this feature on a Public Computer
  • Change your password frequently
